The First Makeup Products I Ever Bought

Hi guys! Let me start by saying that this entry is rather a semi-useless post in a sense that the products I’m about to mention are ancient history (a.k.a. they no longer exist). So there will be no lengthy reviews or recommendations. Just some good ol fashion sharing of things that made an impact on my interest in beauty products.

Can you still remember the first makeup products you’ve ever bought? I’m pretty sure mine were a little bit more than this, but since I haven’t slept properly for the past five days, this is the farthest my brain can recall lol.

#throwback

Back then, I swore I’ll never wear makeup ever (unless it’s prom night). Then my sassy friends introduced me to a face powder, then a lip gloss, and next thing you know I was at the counter about to buy my first blush. A liquid blush to be precise (cause I could spread it on my skin like a lotion very beginner friendly). Since I was the most inconsistent teenager, after that I made another fail decision that I will never wear eye makeup. Didn’t you guys hate lining your waterline with a pencil or squeezing your eyelashes with a curler?

I eventually learned to get used to it though, like with most of the products listed here. If I hadn’t found my favorite Lancome foundation I’d probably still be storing bottles of Palladio’s Liquid Foundation in my drawer (I’ve used up around three of this). And if Smashbox didn’t discontinue this beautiful nude shade, I’d for sure have one just like it piled up with my army of MLBB lipsticks.

I mostly explored drugstore makeup at first. Then I dove into the world of high end brands only to find out that higher price tags does not necessarily mean better quality. I blame this on the MAC concealer that sucked out the moisture off my under eye areas and the Lancome mascara sample that occasionally smudges. But you know what’s fascinating about all these? I still continued to use them lol. I guess I wasn’t really as critical then :)

I’m going to end here now before I turn this post turn into a novel. I hope you enjoyed this quick chat! And if you feel like it, you could also share some of the first makeup products you’ve ever bought here or on your blog. I’d love to know, I’m a really nosy person when it comes to these things.

The first makeup I've bought were all from Careline, when I had to attend a pinning ceremony in college. I was renting a room away from home so I couldn't borrow my mom's. Haha! Nice throwback post! :)

  • Diana says:

that tint from The Boy Shop still exists :P I've been thinking about getting it for ages but, I always forget xD
I believe my first piece of Makeup was a lip gloss from claires. A Bright shimmery pink from Claires – crazy I know. I also got a few items from Essence (mostly because I didn't know better). To that, I wish I had known better brands sooner!
Take care, have a nice day :3

Thanks for sharing these with us! I also love finding out what other bloggers use when it comes to cosmetics. Like you, I also started out with drugstore brands. And I completely agree with you — higher price does NOT guarantee higher quality. My Revlon New Complexion powder foundation outperforms the famous MAC Studio Fix in every aspect! <3

This should be made into a tag! It'll be so much fun!

I really cant remember the first make-up product I ever bought. I'm so old… and my memory is flaky :P haha. I've really no clue! xD

  • The first makeup I got was the lip gloss Candy mag released around early 2000's. I just loved the container, twist-bottom, brush-top pen container, to be honest. Hahaha!

  • I think my first makeup buy was Avon Lip Balm. I started wearing decent makeup when I started working. I donned the espasol look way back in high school, where you put loose powder (like johnson's baby powder) to remove all the oiliness. Wah!

  • Wow, you chose great products! I think that one of my first ones was a Shiseido eyeshadow and a Lancome mascara…

  • This is such a great post to reflect back on what makeup you used to use! I could barely remember what I used in middle school, but I remember the first pressed powder I used was from Covergirl. & I also remember buying eyeshadow from Claires! haha :)

  • i also thought that i would never wear make-up (half true now, I'm still not use to it) or a skincare junkie but my blog talks about these things a lot heheheh. love your photos, i don't know if you water colored or use an app but they are so GREAT!

  • Body Shop lip and cheek tint! Haha super classic!

After seeing my friend with her lip smackers, I decided I liked lip products. So I used a lot of Bonne Bell products when I was young. Mainly lip products. I took a few of mum's elizabeth arden products as I grew older but I didn't get into high end products until I started working for different brands.

  • I was also introduced to makeup by old friends; it began with clear lipgloss for shiny lips and clear mascara (to this day, I have no idea why I bothered)! I love these illustrations of the makeup by the way, did you create them yourself?! :)

The first makeups I ever bought were a combination of Maybelline and the Body Shop products. Now though, I barely buy from Maybelline and there are only a few Body Shop skincare products I use. Hehe

  • foodworldme says:

In all fairness, your first products had pretty decent quality. I started with drugstore stuff. Maybelline, to be precise. Mascaras, lipsticks, eyeshadows… Corny. I didn't have much variety. :))

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hahaha the advantage of having a mom who likes the same makeup as you do! my mom wasnt a makeup fan so i had to explore makeup on my own (with frds ofc). ty anna! <3

  • Shayne ♥ says:

it has been around for ages hahaha. it wa in a different packaging back then… bigger i think.
ooh bright shimmery pink! thats already a big leap for me, up to now im still hestitant to use a gloss in that color hehe

  • Shayne ♥ says:

you seem to be really good at finding good bargain kylie! you should post more beauty entries like your recent purple lip post! <3

  • Shayne ♥ says:

i painted over their orginal images thru photoshop. took awhile to accomplish but totally worth it for me lol
and i agree, im begining to like posts like this too. plus easier to write!
i feel like everyone started with a least one mac product haha they were uber popular during my time

  • Shayne ♥ says:

sayang i originally wanted to do that but i thought maybe noone would want to list down their own first products. or that noone really remembers them anymore haha. id love to see you list tho especially sa lipstick department!

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hahaha! <3 dont worry im the same with other stuff to. but i guess these products i can remember cause of my "noob" experiences with them!

  • Shayne ♥ says:

wow hats off to candy mag for releasing a lipgloss line. i didnt know they did that :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

ay me too! hahaha! (but in grade school tho) exactly the same powder from JnJ.

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hi elena! those are nice starter brands! and thanks! :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

i feel like everyone started with a face powder (i was about to type facebook lol) mine was from JnJ – which reminds me i forgot to include it here lol

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hahaha, buti nalang we didnt stick to what we claimed we were before! haha thanks sis! i watercolor painted on their images through PS, mejo matagal gawin but fun. i can teach you if you like :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

its been around for ages haha. nagpapalit lang ng pakaging like every year i think :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

ah lip smackers! i had those too, how could i foget them. they used to have generic flavors but now their more creative with them. i think recently saw one with m&m's & skittles flavor.

  • Shayne ♥ says:

a clear mascara! again one item that i forgot to include here. i used one too lol and your right they were pretty close to being useless. at one point tho i started using it to keep my brows in placed. it worked better that way ^^

i painted over their original images via PS, im glad you like it! it wasnt done on an actual canvas tho cause that will take forever for a slow painter like me hehe

  • Shayne ♥ says:

those brands are actually good for starting up cause they arent that expensive :) but youre right tho, come to think of it i dont really buy makeup from bodyshop anymore. too many brands not enough moneyz!

  • Shayne ♥ says:

oh not corny at all, tbh i wish i started with maybelline. they had pretty good budget lipstick, blush, concealer, and most esp mascara. love their mascaras! <3

  • Christine Uy says:

You've always had amazing taste in makeup ever since sis, I admire that! :) I've never ever worn any makeup when I was in philippines back then, nakakailang coz people will just keep staring for some reason.. hehe.. I just starting obsessing over makeup when I moved here in NZ, it's like love at first sight. =D The Body Shop lip and cheek stain looks really cool. I've always wanted to try their products :)

Take care always, love Christine ~ xx

Oh my god I love how ancient these products all are L O L. I actually started getting into makeup pretty late (the first foundation I ever bought was the L'Oreal True Match one), so most of my makeup was bought last year and this year. (Talk to me again in like, 5 years and all my makeup will be ancient, l o l) But dang, we've really escalated into how picky we are about our products, eh? CAKEY FOUNDATION? /TOSS INTO TRASH BIN/

  • Belle Femme says:

Very interesting to know your first makeup tries. I generally just used eye liner and lip gloss (drugstore ones) :-)

  • Czarina Mae says:

Hi Shayne! Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog :)

Anyway I do remember the first makeup products I've purchased with my own money! It's one of the liquid foundations and press powder from Maybelline. I hated how my face always looked so oily in photos so I decided to give foundations and powders a try. Haha! And then from there I started exploring more and got into mascara, eyeliners and lipsticks! Although nowadays I seldom wear eye makeup because they're so tedious and I'm far too lazy haha!

Have a great weekend Shayne! :) I've missed your blog!

  • Jhanz A. says:

WOW! You have a great memory on these stuff! I can't really remember what comprises my first ever make up kit, but I think it has a lot of avon, maybeline, and ever bilena in there. I was young and naive and broke hehehe

  • Stephanie G says:

High end na agad ang bilini mo sis ha! hehe. I still remember buying a Nichido eyeshadow palette, Fashion21 clear mascara and Allue makeup from San San. I only started to buy good quality makeup when I was a freshman in college.

  • Hollie says:

I enjoyed reading this! It's so nice to know what your first picks were. In fairness high-end agad ang peg. hahaha
I definitely remember the very first eyeshadow palette I bought (I already graduated college that time LOL) It was a palette from “Careline”! Then ELF cosmetics landed in the Philippines! So I bought tons of stuff from ELF… I think my very first post on my blog was an ELF haul…hahaha

  • wow galing, i suck at watercolor painting hehehe

  • Shayne ♥ says:

super alot easier sa PS sis, if i had to paint this otherwise it will take forever and a half hahaha

  • Shayne ♥ says:

ay thats true! haha but a lot has changed now esp here in the south. its normal na to wear makeup. but i have to admit sometimg i get ilang also when im wearing super bold lipstick.
TBS cheek tint can be used on the lips too btw! <3

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hahaha well at least your makeup journey is all documented in a blog! i wish i had a blog back then. hows lunduhn!? :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

thanks belle! eyeliner was too advance for me back then hihi, youre very brave to use it right away! <3

  • Shayne ♥ says:

omg yes! that was also one of the reasons why i felt the need to buy a face powder. how could i forget hahaha. did you get into thos oil paper powders and oil film strips as well?

  • Shayne ♥ says:

aw ive missed you too czar! tagal mo nawala! <3

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hahaha likewise! there are a lot of older stuff i actually forgot to include here. one of them is from avon! their clear mascara gel, remember those? :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

ahaha ay hindi sis, i forgot to include my avon and j&j purchases as well. and i remember trying fashion21. at first i thought they were for kids cause of the packaging lol

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hahaha hindi sis ngayon ko lang naalala that i bought a couple of avon and j&j products pa. the comments reminded me of alot of older products. nostalgia! lol.
ay i was totally unaware of elf, which is saying cause they have lots of good stuff pa naman. good for starter kits. maaga palang you have good instinct na in buying makeup <3

  • Victoria says:

Buti pa kayo antitino na ng first makeup purchases niyo! Haha. I used to purchase ones from Ever Bilena and Nichido and we all know that they don't make foundation/powder shades for anyone who's darker than NC30. I'm NC40 so you can just imagine how ghostly my face looked back then. Not to mention the common Filipina mistake: NATURAL shade makes you look natural. HELL NO! Hahaha

  • Hollie says:

hehehe, hindi naman sis. It just so happened that the very first youtube guru I watched before (xteeener) was using some ELF products at the time. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have recognized the brand, when they had their first stall here in Cebu.

  • Sarah Rizaga says:

Gotta love throwbacks! Back then, i don't really used make-ups and stuff because if i do, people would label me as this and that, and i don't want people to get the wrong impression about me, though i really love make-up, i just used baby powder because thats what others (my classmates) used. But when i graduated HS, that's when i started to experiment with make-ups, i would watch tutorials on Youtube and my fave gurus are Michelle Phan and Bubzbeauty. So anyway, the first make up i bought was i think from Avon, the Simply Pretty face powder and lippie. These days, im not really good with putting eye-liners (still suck!) because i have shaky hands :(

  • I haven't been around here for quite some time! I miss your blog! :) I was so like you before. I told myself I'd never ever wear makeups but there's this one girl I met in college who told me that I looked really pale and she said “girl, maybe you need to wear a little lipstick..” and I was taken aback! haha! I was surprised but I realized she was right, I did look pale… and so it started there. LOL

  • Omg, I had fun reading this. It made me think back to the first products that I've ever used and my gosh, the first makeup I've ever done. I lined my waterline & I looked dreadful. I am not one of those people that look good with lined waterline. HHAHAHAA. I look like I lacked sleep and I was out to kill someone. HAHAHA, do you have a few MLBB favorites that you could talk about & recommend besides the Urban Decay one that you mentioned in your Natural “No Makeup” Look since we don't have Urban Decay here?:)

  • Bethany says:

I used one of my mother's Covergirl trios of brown. She'd hit pan on the only one she used, so she gave it to me. Haha. Also… I used liquid liner on my waterline for the longest time ever. 8/

  • Parang di ko na maalala kung ano unang make up na nabili ko sis. Maybe it was a simple face powder or a lipstick! I'm such a late bloomer, college na ako ng mag start akong mag lagay ng kung ano2x sa fes ko and it was only when I'm a senior when I started plucking my eyebrows hahha oh,omg, I just remember na, I think the first one I bought was the black eyeliner from Avon, yung retractable cya. I don't know if meron pa cla nu'n,not a big fan of Avon kasi but I used it (only it) on my “emo” days.chos hahahaha emo-emohan yata ako dati hahaha

    love lots,
    Tin

  • Shayne ♥ says:

Hahaha! I went thru the same phase din with face powders. I also thought that if i use a “light” or “white” powder. Itll make my complexion lighter talaga – as in evenly lol

  • Shayne ♥ says:

Ay until now i dont get to perfectly line with eyeliner even tho ive done it probably a hundred times already hihi. I also started w makeup around hs cause everyone thinks its too early to start at gs. I think they are partly correct tho. Para maprotect ung baby skin fromharsh cosmetic side effects :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

I missed hearing from you!! My friend said something similar to me but i think it was blush or eyeshadow. She loves loves loves clinique so i was exposed to expensive makeup agad agad. I got turned off at first cause of the price lol

  • Shayne ♥ says:

me too omg! it looks good when im smiling but when my face is at rest i look exactly like what you just described hahaha! i cant smile naman all the time cause that will look creepy.
as for MLBB lippies, i think youll like mac brave or mac mehr, i think itll match your skintone <3

  • Shayne ♥ says:

oh isnt using liquid liner on the waterline dangerous? ive always wondered that, never tried it tho :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

hahaha did you mean goth eyemakeup? i wanted that! buti nalang i didnt go thru it tho cause when i try that look now, hindi talaga bagay lol. and speaking of plucking eyebrows i was so scared to try it at first, i remember i even used ice cubes to numb the area prio to plucking :P

  • Shayne ♥ says:

haha YT gurus talaga changed the makeup world. esp the first youtubers! my early faves were pixiwoo tanya burr and elle fowler :)

  • Czarina Mae says:

haha yes and I'm happy to be back! <3

Oooh oo nga the oil film strips! Haha. But for some reason they made my face break out kaya I stopped using them :P

  • Shayne ♥ says:

haha, i remember they even made film strips with powder… and blush! — this one also made my face break out :)

  • Dawn Doneza says:

Lol. The things we're scared to try when we swore off makeup. Like eyebrow plucking, lash curling and waterlining. I was scared of them too, but I do them now. Hehehe.

  • Dawn Doneza says:

Mine's an Avon lip balm in grade school, a Clean & Clear pressed powder and Maybelline lip balm in high school. That's as far as I can remember. :)

  • Shayne ♥ says:

waterlining! ay Ihated that hahaha <3

  • Shayne ♥ says:

Lucky you! <3 I remember I wanted to use the clean and clear pressed powder cause of their cute commercials but my skin reacted to it so I was stuck with JnJ.
